David had his knee surgery on May 28th. It went exceedingly well. Pain levels were controlled much better than last time. We have really enjoyed his company--flying high on Oxycontin--congenial, talkative and very humorous. Of course, ever the budding Pharmacist, he took himself off the heavy drugs quickly and stepped down to a much milder pain killer. Unfortunately, though, we had to add Benadryl, since he developed a horrible localized allergic reaction to a liquid adhesive that was swabbed on his knee. His knee is covered with welts and blisters, and itches and burns more than it hurts.
He spends most of the day in a CPM, Continuous Passive Movement machine. It constantly and slowly bends his knee in and out so that it doesn't "freeze" before his gets to rehab next week.
He spends the other part of the day trying to find privacy under the covers so he can have a private phone call with Rachel!
He also has a self-contained cryo-compression machine that he can wrap around his leg to "ice" it and apply compression. He uses that about 1 1/2 hours every 4 hours. It really helps with pain control and swelling.
David the Elder--
A couple of months ago, Dave hurt his shoulder lifting a heavy toolbox at an awkward angle. He didn't think much of it, but it hurts him at night, keeping him from sleeping through the night. When we were at the Orthopedic for David, we had the doctor look at Dave's shoulder. From an xray and physical testing, it looks like Dave injured the ligament in his shoulder, and maybe his rotator cuff. An MRI with contrast is scheduled for next week. He will probably have to have surgery, followed by a month of complete immobilization of his arm, and four months of physical therapy.
Since going full-time, he has not had a hair cut--I want him to have a pony-tail. He likes to fluff it all up to look goofy, trying to convince me that I want him to cut it. Try again, Dave.
Really Homeless--
As of June 1st we are homeless. Our lease on the apartment ended. Since May 28th, we have been in a hotel since our RV is in repair. We are truly homeless!
Mike and Cherie--
Mike and Cherie came to Michigan the past week for vacation. Cherie had always heard about Niagara Falls and really wanted to see them. So we were lucky to have them with us a few days before they went to Canada and for dinner tonight.
Cherie has just finished her Associates Degree and is awaiting word of acceptance to the University of California--San Diego's nursing program for a BSN. UCSD has a very prestigious nursing school and her top grades make her chances very high. Go girl!!!
